Fongguei is situated at the end of Fongguei peninsula and it is a very ancient fishing village. It is known for the sound of its waves, the pillars of water blown up from the blowholes, and the whistling sound that is produced when the waves recede from the blowholes and suck air down through them.
The veins of the columnar basalt on the coast of Fongguei are well-developed and the basalt pillars are very thick and firm. As the base of the cliff has been eroded by the sea for a prolonged period, long and narrow trenches have formed. Sea-eroded caves are also formed at the top of the trenches due to sea erosion. If the rock on the top of the sea-eroded caves is too seriously eroded, it will not be able to support the weight of the upper rock and it will finally collapse, making the trench even deeper. When the waves get into the narrow sea-eroded trenches on the ground level, the strong movement of the waves gives a number of thunder-like wave sounds. The famous “Hearing waves at Fongguei” is so named due to this majestic view. If there is strong wind blowing in the right direction, you will see the fantastic view of pillars of water blowing up from the blowholes during rising tides. It is because when the tide rises, the air in the sea-eroded caves cannot escape and so the compressed air blows up through the gaps of the rock together with the water, forming pillars of water with a roaring sound. It is like operating a wind box and so it is called Fongguei. But the sound is not produced everyday! Only when there is a typhoon or during rising tides accompanied by strong wind and big waves will the sound be produced. It depends on the tourists’ luck to see if they can hear it. There is a two-storey Kuanhaiting (sea-watching pavilion) on the coast, which is an ideal place to enjoy the spectacular coastal view of Fongguei. You can also look far into the Siyu on the opposite side of the sea.
The quaint village of Fongguei also has a unique charisma. A number of historic homes made of shihlao shihku rock are found in the winding lanes. Islands like “Hujing” and “Tongpan” situated far away in Tiannan can also be seen. The beautiful scenery is really unforgettable. Lingte Wenwang temple, which has a history of over two hundred years, is located in the vicinity of Fongguei station. Having been repaired four times, it was repaired once more in 1961. The ten odd meter long imperial boat kept inside is the greatest feature of the temple. Many people go there for worshipping and it is the religious center of the local people. You may go there for a visit when you go to Fongguei.
You can also visit this quaint fishing village along the coast. There are many dark rocks along the coast and the local people often come here to collect oysters and seaweed among the reefs. A number of historic homes made of shihlao shihku rock are found in the winding lanes. “Lingte Wenwang temple”, which is located in the vicinity of Fongguei bus station, has a history of over two hundred years and is the religious center of the local people. Having undergone a number of repairs, it was rebuilt in 1997. It is expected to be completed in 4 years. There is a house adjacent to the temple, where a ten odd meter long wooden mechanic “imperial boat” was once kept. But it was moved in 1987 and we can only wait for the instruction of God to see when another imperial boat will be built. It is said that people going to Wenwang temple often have their wishes fulfilled and therefore many people go there for worshipping.
