Seven Beauties Tomb
A tale of virtue lies behind this site. Legend has it that during the early Ming Dynasty, seven women were doing the laundry by the well when pirates attacked. The women chose to throw themselves in the well rather than be dishonored. After the local people filled in the well and made it their grave, seven Catalpa Bungei Trees grew up over the well. The trees remain green all year round and release an unusual fragrance.

Seven Beauties Tomb
The south side of Cimei Island is also the start point of the tour. It is here that the legend of a defense of virtue gave rise to the name of Cimei Township. As the story goes, during the Jiajing Era (Ming Dynasty), pirates landed on the south side of Cimei. As all the men were away at sea catching fish, only the women, children and elderly were left. Seven women were working in the fields when the pirates attacked and they chose to drown themselves in a well rather than be dishonored. After the event, the local people turned the well into their grave by filling it with soil. Eventually seven rare Catalpa Bungei Trees grew up around the site. In 1949, Penghu County Magistrate Liu Yen-fu accompanied General Ho Chih-hao on a visit to the Seven Beauties Tomb. General Ho was moved by the tale and composed an ode which he had carved into a stone tablet: "Seven beauties stood by the wall chose death before dishonor, their brave souls now make their home in these fragrant trees growing forever green over the well." Later, Dayu Township was renamed Cimei Township and the Seven Beauties Tomb became a key local feature.

Seven Beauties Tomb, called Da Islet, has a sad but touching legend. In the reign of Jiajing, Ming dynasty, pirates attacked Da Islet, killed people, burnt houses, and robbed money. Not yielding to the pirates, seven virtuous girls jumped into a well. Later, townsmen filled the well up with soil. Before long, seven sweet-flower trees with green leaves and delicate fragrance grew out. Praising their virtue, people set a monument called Seven Beauties Tomb.
